In our Spring / Summer 2006 Newsletter, Access, we posed the question... Can you place this photo?
People who have been here more than 20 years may remember it. The buildingis no longer standing, but it once had a very important role on campus.
Here's the photo as it appeared in the newsletter.
It's the Bauhaus - the former studio of sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. The studio began as a carriage house in 1886 for the house formerly at 801 University Ave., although it actually fronted on Marshall St., SU acquired it in 1945 and in 1946 began renovations to make it a studio for Mestrovic.
Here's a shot of the interior.
Here's a map to show you where the Bauhaus stood. Marshall St. is at the top of the map.
Mestrovic left the University in 1955 and the studio later became a woodworking and metalworking shop for architecture and art students. The Bauhaus was finally torn down in the early 1980s to make way for the new University Inn and Conference Center - now the University Sheraton.
