In our Fall 2009 Newsletter, Access, we posed the question... Can you place this campus photograph? Does anyone remember a tunnel under a greenhouse?
Here's the photo as it appeared in the newsletter. Note the rear of Slocum Hall at the left with Sims Hall in the back of the picture. The photograph from 1938 was taken by Robert H. Edmunds '38.
To get a better perspective, this aerial from the 1920s shows Slocum Hall at the left, the greenhouse as it appears above, but another building in front of the greenhouse. That's the former SU Powerhouse that was demolished in the late 1920s. If you look closely you will see the basement entrance in the center.
This drawing from a 1939 campus map helps even more, clearly showing the tunnel burrowing into the SU rock garden.
And here's the location as it appears today. Slocum is still at left, but the construction of Link Hall 1968-1970 (and Link+ in 2008) destroyed any remnant of the old Greenhouse and rock garden.
