Notes:

Ernest S. Bird, the major donor, graduated from Syracuse University in 1916 with a bachelor of science degree from the College of Liberal Arts.

In addition to Bird, many individuals and organizations contributed to the library. Gifts of the late George Arents, Hon. '33, parents of Syracuse University students, trustees of the University, and many other private donors made construction of the building possible. Additionally, the Federal government contributed 3 million dollars under Titles I and II.

The library opened in November 1972 and consolidated into seven levels the former Carnegie Library and 10 branches.

The library contains 2.3 million books, and 11,500 periodicals, 45,000 linear feet of manuscripts, and 3.6 million microforms in its seven levels.
