In January 1915 the University acquired the William Nottingham property for use as the Chancellor's residence. As part of the transaction the house at 604 University Avenue which was occupied by Chancellor Day was transferred to Mr. Nottingham. A gift from John D. Archbold and the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Nottingham enabled the University to obtain the property which had an assessed value of $52,300, as compared with an $18,800 assessed value of the Chancellor's residence that was transferred to Mr. Nottingham.

The house was built by Mr. Nottingham in 1901-02. Both Mr. and Mrs.(the former Eloise Holden) Nottingham were alumni of the University and both served on the Board of Trustees.
