Syracuse University honored Professor Berwald with the degree of master of music in 1903 and then the degree of doctor of music in 1912. From 1922 to 1925 Berwald served as conductor of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Professor Berwald retired from Syracuse University in 1943 after serving 52 years on its faculty.
