The cover of Burton Blatt's best known book, Christmas in Purgatory, 1966. This classic photo essay is a searing portrait of life in a mental institution that brought national attention to the abuse of people with developmental disabilities. Burton Blatt came to Syracuse University in 1969 and went on to serve as professor of education, Director of the Division of Special Education and Rehabilitation, one of the founders of the Center on Human Policy, and Dean of the SU School of Education. He was a pioneer in humanizing services for people with developmental disabilities.
