Photograph of the Alpha Tau Omega cannon explosion at the 1960 Syracuse University vs. Penn State game. A gift from a 1922 alumnus, the cannon was fired for every SU touchdown and every winning home game. At the Penn State game, the ATO brothers fired a shot, but a spark fell into a suitcase full of gunpowder behind the cannon. The subsequent explosion flung 5 students into the air. All were taken to the hospital, but there were no major injuries. University officials decided firing the cannon was too dangerous, and it was never used again.
