“A Century of SU Game Programs”

Game Program Cover

In May 2008 the University Archives mounted an exhibition highlighting the variety of sports programs in its collections. The exhibition ran in the Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center until September 2008.

In the first edition of the Syracuse University yearbook, The Syracusean of 1878, the Athletic Association of Syracuse University listed the sports played by the enthusiastic students attending SU - baseball, cricket, and football. There was a Field Day that included, among other events, the wheelbarrow race, the rope pull, the egg race and the three legged race.

Within a decade there were more sports embraced, playing wasn't limited to the University campus and fans included the interested public as well as the students. These sports programs from the University Archives collection reflect that growing fervor.

Over the years some sports have flourished: football, basketball and lacrosse. Some have waned: baseball. Some are retired off the roster: boxing. All are documented in the colorful, ephemeral memorabilia of the souvenir of the day that was clutched with excitement in the hands of those ardent fans - the game program.

Exhibition curated by Mary M. O'Brien and Mary E. Siconolfi
