The Orange Nine first hit the field in the late 1800s, taking its place as one of Syracuse University's first sports, matched only by cricket and football. The team remained in its place as one of Syracuse's major sports until shortly before the winter of 1971-1972, when the Athletic Policy Board suspended baseball due to major budget reductions and a change in the school year calendar. The equipment and uniforms were sold off, and the team was retired to a club sport in 1972.
