If you look closely you will see that the left portion of this immense building is actually the Hall of Languages. So what is the domed building to its rear?

In May 1906 word went out to SU alumni that the previous June a committee was appointed to look into an Alumni Hall on campus. The pictures above were an artist's sketch of the proposed building.

On Feb. 20, 1907 the following resolution was passed: "Resolved: that the sum of $250,000 be raised by subscription in shares of $100.00 each, payable one fifth annually from date, each subscriber to one or more shares to be designated a founder, and the names of the founders to be enrolled by classes, chronologically on a memorial tablet in the proposed Alumni Hall."

Some funds were indeed raised - $15,000 according to this undated document.

By 1908 Chancellor Day was using this new image of campus in his overall fundraising efforts. This view - with the proposed Alumni Hall - was used for postcards and in calendars for a number of years.

Alas - the building was never built as we all know. Although at least once a year or so we are asked the question - "Why did the University tear down that big building with the dome?"
