The FBI Oral History Heritage Project is a function of the Former Agents of the FBI Foundation. The FBI Foundation is the heart of a non-profit organization called the Society of the Former Agents of the FBI, Inc., which was founded in 1937. The Society has over 8,000 members.
The mission of the FBI Foundation is to aid the members of the Society of Former Agents, and families in need, to further the education of our youth, recognize humanitarian efforts of its members, spouses and others, and to contribute to worthy organizations related to law enforcement.
The FBI Oral History Heritage Project seeks to furter this commitment to education by developing, preserving and disseminating an oral history of the FBI for use by journalists, scholars and researchers. The history of the Bureau is communitcated through the individual experiences of former agents. Begun in 2003, the Oral History Project is carried out through former agents who have been trained to collect oral histories. Since it's inception, the project has collected over 450 interviews; 240 are available online through the National Law Enforcement Museum's website.
